Kiss this

Weather, pollution and vandalism may take their toll…

But the artists – and the subject matter - will definitely do the rest.

„Work began Tuesday to repaint Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev’s passionate kiss with East German strongman Eric Honecker on the longest-surviving stretch of the Berlin Wall.“

Now you don’t see it, now you don’t

And still don’t, actually, the Berlin Wall, I mean. It’s time for another documentary about an invisible wall that used to be all too visible here a few years back but that was then and this is now so lights, camera and lack of action anyway.

Actress Tilda Swinton will be biking along the same ex-Berlin Wall route she and filmmaker Cynthia Beatt took ten years ago when they filmed the wall that wasn’t there then, either. This Gesamtkunstwerk (total art form) will then be put together in a piece to be called “Cycling the Invisible Frame.”

Whatever. But if I were her I would take it easier on myself and travel along what used to be the Berlin Wall on what used to be a bike – and take a car instead.

“The title refers to the fact that most of the wall has been torn down, though many Germans still speak of an invisible wall in the minds dividing east and west Germany.“

No Russian to conclusions here

Soviet if it’s history?

Wall, somebody had to do it.

“Khrushchev told East German authorities to lay an iron ring around Berlin.”

German left loses its head again

Or one of them, anyway. The grave of “Red Rosa” Luxemburg, the murdered revolutionary heroine of a revolution that never took place, may not be her grave at all. The grave (not?) has been a pilgrimage picnic ground for millions of fans for decades, of course.

Pathologist types at Berlin’s Charité hospital claim to have discovered a headless “mystery corpse” in its mortuary that is actually the one belonging to the leftist leader who was shot by right-wing extremists in 1919.

“The notion that millions of her fans have been duped for 90 years by going on pilgrimages each January to a grave that does not contain her body was greeted with shock and consternation yesterday.”

Art for Art’s sake

But who is this Art guy anyway? And why is he demanding 15,000 euros compensation for some of the Schmiererei (smearing) he splashed up on the remains of the Berlin Wall some twenty years ago?

I could have done that. And I would have, too, had I known you could get paid for it. But Art doesn’t even want the 3000 euros the East Side Gallery is willing to pay him for his old (or soon-to-be-repainted?) Kunst. I tell you. Some folks are never satisfied.

“Some artists refused to join in the effort and are demanding 15,000 euros (19,900 dollars) in compensation instead of the 3,000 euros on offer, arguing that they have not received a fair share of the Gallery’s earnings over the years.”

We sure showed him!

Speaking of neo-Nazis, or real ones, actually… The city council of a place called Schwabach unanimously voted yesterday (that means all of them, by the way), on the 27th of March, 2009, to “distance themselves” from the title of honorary citizen given to Adolf Hitler in 1933.

By doing this, they say, they are giving a “clear signal” and showing that their city fosters a conscious and sensible handling of the past. Of course by waiting until 2009 to do so and then making a big noise about it is also giving a clear signal that they are morons, too, but still.

“Wir setzen mit unserem heutigen Beschluss ein klares Signal und weisen gleichzeitig darauf hin, dass unsere Stadt einen bewussten Umgang mit der Vergangenheit pflegt.”

Krupp, a German family

Although made in Hollywood, it seems. You know; hard-working, dynasty-building folks like you and me (or at least like you) who raise well-behaved kids and build tons of really cool weapons for world wars all over the world but that’s beside the point, this new ZDF three part series is an in-depth study of German history at it’s very shallowest and therefore quite entertaining I am sure, although it doesn’t necessarily have to be because this is the ZDF and they will be taking your money whether you like it or not anyway.

“Die Produktion ist ein gutes Beispiel dafür, wie das Fernsehen unsere Vergangenheit entsorgt.”

German game gene getting Germans going ga-ga again

As you may or may not be aware of, Germans have a serious problem when it comes to playing with board games and model trains and dominos and all that. The Germans themselves are certainly not aware of this problem. Otherwise they wouldn’t be playing around with board games, model trains and dominos all the time like they do (would they?).

And otherwise they wouldn’t think of setting up a huge path of dominos in Berlin to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. That’s right; a two or three kilometer-long chain of Styrofoam domino slab thingies will be set up on the 9th of November in order to, well, get knocked down again. You know; the Cold War domino effect and all that? Only without the Cold War. Whatever.

I want to take this opportunity to remind any or even all of you out there that recognizing symptoms like this in yourself or in others is the first step toward recovery and finding appropriate treatment. Or if you prefer, think of it as being that frist domino thingy that gets knocked down in the process. Fragen Sie Ihren Artzt oder Apotheker or something.

British architect uncovers lost museum in Berlin

Taking more than sixty years of thorough German analysis and eleven years of painstaking search (from within or something), British architect David Chipperfield (no, he’s not one of those dancer dudes) has at last uncovered Berlins mythical Neues Museum (new museum), which is actually quite old, of course.

Thought to be lost forever in the bureaucratic recesses which continue to shroud anything that has to do with Berlin’s mysterious neoclassical Museum Island complex, “Indy” Chipperfield, as his friends call him, pulled off the tarp that had been covering the unsightly construction sight to unveil the now brand spanking new New Museum, although it’s old, like I said already.

“The Neues Museum has finally awoken from its coma.”
