Unemployed still vacationing too much

Most American working stiffs could only dream of having the three week paid vacation that the German long-term unemployed get. If they had the time to dream about stuff like that, that is. But all pleasant dreams, even those here in Germany, must sooner or later come to an end. Yup, it looks as though more of those infamous and dreaded Amerikanische Verhältnisse (American conditions) are not only creeping into the German working world Schritt für Schritt, they’ve begun creeping into the German non-working world now, too.

Native politicians are getting so bold these days that they are actually proposing a stunning Tabubruch (break of taboo) and want to cut vacation entirely for the long-term unemployed this fall. How shocking (not).

Cutting vacation for a German is the equivalent of I-CAN’T-BRING-MYSELF-TO-PRINT-THIS-HERE-IT’S-JUST-TOO-HORRIBLE-TO-CONTEMPLATE for other citizens of the world. It’s cruel and inhuman. It’s like Guantanamo or something.

But these guys obviously haven’t thought this one through. If a German can’t go on vacation, he has no incentive to work. And if he can’t even go on vacation while he’s unemployed, well, than there’s no point in him being unemployed in the first place. Wait a minute. Maybe they did think this one through.

Ich arbeite weil ich kann, ich mache Urlaub weil ich muss.

1 - Hadn't heard this was getting any attention as a possible reform. Good for them.

2 - I was booked into an expensive Mediteranean hotel resort in Turkey recently and chatted with an unemployed German single mother and her daughter. My mind boggled that this was even possible and I recalled an episode in 1980 Australia. I had posted my unemployment claim form from a city where I didn't live and upon my return was summoned to explain the reason. Did I go this town to look for work? No, I took a couple of days off. Well, I was told that I wasn't entitled to holidays at taxpayer expense and that my 'entitlements' for those days would be deducted from my next cheque. In some respects if you want to see where Europe is heading come and visit Australia - it will have any European dole recipient shitting bricks! (Comment this)

4 - Well you're going to call me insane in the membrane but I can kind of relate to an unemployed person who wants to visit his or her family once a year without having to tell the authorities. Simply consider that "vacation" does not necessarily imply luxury hotels and a lot of leisure expenses but for most people living on around 400 euros it rather means just getting away from your shack for a short while. (Comment this)

5 - HI, there.

you completly right! very lazy (the average german worker gets 3-4 weeks of paid holiday a year! so He is lazy) long-term unemployeds in Germany need to get to know real capitalism:

- unemployment benefits the Wisconsin way
- medical insure like the average american blue collar worker (less to none)
- wage offers like the average illegal latino picker (below minimum wage)
- layoff laws like a free US citizen: you are fired = wait for the security, pack your things, pick your last cheque and LEAVE !

what we have now in Germany clearly is a most dangerous form of SOCIALISM !!
unemployed people who habe money to buy food, who live in appartements with electricity heating, and tap water, who gets medical insurance paid for by the state!

we got to change this! but first we tell all free-market-approach shitheads to FUCK OFF. go preach elsewhere.

red danger

P.S. the lazy and non-performing german workforce - less than 40 million people - scored again in 2005: world champion in exports ( not per-capita but in absolut numbers). (Comment this)
