Berlin school director tries to finagle early retirement by asking for closure of own school

In a highly-theatrical and pitiful show of shameless self-indulgence, a Berlin school director has officially asked for the closing of the school she is in charge of running.

In what is supposed to come down to being a public capitulation to school violence but is in reality an admission of the inadequacy of Germany’s archaic school system in general and the failure of it’s pampered and anti-authoritarian teachers in particular, the director claims that “school violence is no longer under control” and that “the most violent aggressors have now become the role models” here.

When asked about her own personal contribution to the establishment of good role models, the director refused to comment.

That there really isn't all that much school violence here (at least compared to, say, the USA) isn’t really the issue. Or the fact that only about 20% of the kids at her school are “real” Germans. The real issue is that none of these “educators” are prepared to do their jobs and are stressed out because of it (but they don’t understand that) and expect someone else to do their work for them so they can retire when they’re 50 like they planned to do when deciding to become teachers in the first place.

Of course, that most parents here think exactly the same way when it comes to raising their own children does not exactly make matters any easier.

I know! They should reform the school system and then everything will be fine again! When was it again that the new government was planning to check that off its list of reforms? Let’s see. They’re doing the medical system reform this week. With any amount of luck maybe the school system reform can be unter Dach und Fach (all finished and tucked away) before summer vacation comes around.

Ich muss unbedingt noch eine Kur machen!

1 - From what I hear from my teacher-friends, the basic problem is that the schools are overburdoned with regulations from the Schulministerium. Give them more autonomy/authority to make their own decisions and to do things that make sense, and the schools might start getting better results. Oh well, dream on. (Comment this)

2 - At higher school levels those who dont respect the requested discipline are always told that their school isnt the basic school form one must attend to. So if they like to continue their undisciplined behavior, they will simple be forced to change their school to a lower level. And who wants to throw away his professional future?

But that particular school already is the basic form, so what to do with them?
This certainly has nothing to do with early retirement. Reports show that less than 20% of the pupils are german. All the other ethnical groups are in constant rivalries and even threaten the teachers. Something like this can only happen in Berlin... and what is the intention of the softy government there? They want to send more psychologists to help those poor foreign kids out of their miserable lives... (Comment this)

3 - I wonder if the German government will ever allow home schooling? Not that I think it's great or anything. But if someone has the means and ability to educate their own children, with what right can it be denied them? Especially if the public schools cannot offer quality. (Comment this)

4 - @ Indeterminacy

Private schools are the solution to that problem. The kids are there like in a barracks 24/7 and are properly educated. There you will not find any problems like those above. But hey, what kind of parents with sufficient money and education would send their kids to a basic school anyway :)

Its really the school-type for those without any bright future, you might send those hopeless to a workcamp as well, and nothing would be lost.
Whats "Prügelstrafe" in english? That might help :D (Comment this)

5 - When I translated that Tucholsky piece that used "Prügelstrafe" I translated it as "beating amendment"

In this context, probably: a good beating (Comment this)
