Israeli no problem of ours

Alles Gute zum Geburtstag (Happy Birthday), Israel! They’re doing their sixtieth this Thursday, you see. But don’t ever ask for help from us if the going ever gets any tougher than it already is. Military-wise, we mean. We won’t be there any more for you then than we aren’t there now for anybody else out there when the going gets tough, wherever that might be, despite our official foreign policy of explicitly stating otherwise.

Or at least that’s what most Germans think, if you want to believe the latest greatest survey out there. A mere 13 percent of Germans asked would be in favour of providing Israel with military support were that country to come under attack, again, for instance.

The young and the restless-type Germans in particular could particularly care less when it comes to what might happen to the Jewish state, too. A whopping 65 percent of those surveyed below the age of 40 do not believe that Germany has a “special responsibility” towards Israel because of its history.

That results like these seem to make Chancellor Merkel’s ritual recitation of this official “special relationship”, this “cornerstone of German policy since the days of Chancellor Konrad Adenauer”, ring hollow at best, like it has with all the Chancellors before here, well, who cares? She’s just attending a birthday party, after all, everybody here is thinking. And if push ever comes to shove we can always apologize for our official change of heart later.

Eine schöne Bescherung, oder?

1 - Germany won't have to apologize but it might have to explain to its erstwhile Iranian partners why it sold three of the most current Dolphin-class attack subs to Israel. Which Israel promptly retrofitted nuclear tipped cruise missiles on.

Each year the US Consulate in Mexico City places a wreath on the mass graves of six teenage military cadets, Los Ninos Heroes, that died defending the city. What everybody, at least the polite and nuanced ones, doesn't mention is that it was soldiers of the US Army from New York militia that led the assault to capture the fortress of Chaputepec and it was the equally hated Texas Rangers that were the first into Constitution Plaza. So if the Americans and the Mexicans can play nice with each other what's to say that Germany might suffer the same kind of institutional amnesia. (Comment this)

2 - Oh stop that BS both of you, as if any of Israels neighbors are that dumb to attack our little holy country. And just because the U.S. has a messiah (We are the protector of the world, btw the russians said the same thing to us in the east too) complex doesn't mean we have to have it too. (Comment this)

3 - Sorry, I simply didn't understand your point. And if the reference is that Israel's neighbors would not attack a nuclear armed state then you seem to have forgotten the Yom Kippur War in 1973 when it was quite obvious that Israel did have nuclear weapons, the means to deliver them and strong rumors that these bombs were deployed in case the Arab armies advanced any further. (Comment this)

4 - Volker, it's not about a messiah complex. I just have to smirk at all the talk about "special relationship" when that's all it is, just talk. WE (as in US) are always the hypocrites, remember? But, then again, what else can Germany say (officially)? Got to hell, Israel? (Comment this)
