And the winner was...

Can't post a real post today. I'm having a couple of big-time Hollywood film producer types over to "do brunch".

So sieht das Leben der anderen (in Kalifornien?) aus.

Kommentare auf Deutsch? Logisch.

1 - I also think it's weird how Americans refuse to dub foreign films !
Why is that?

Of course it is hard to do it well - but with everyone constantly staring at the subtitles, most of the facial expressions and gestures go unnoticed by the viewers. (Comment this)

2 - Hi Zyme, it's really just economics. Americans don't really watch all that many foreign films so it's too expensive. I also think we like that "authentic" touch to hearing a foreign language like that. And the dubbing industry here in Germany is really amazing. It's the other way around, really. Everybody watches so many foreign films here. And the strange thing is how quickly one gets used to the dubbing. It bothers you for about five minutes and then you absolutely don't notice it anymore! And I even prefer some of the German voices over the original American ones! (Comment this)

3 - Maybe a memory of the dubbing from the old Godzilla or Steve Reeves films. As an example I watched the Russian film Night Watch last night and kept wondering where the captions were, from the theatrical release, until I realized that this version was dubbed. Not to put down my own countrymen but Americans as a rule generally do not watch serious films in any language unless something blows up or the lead actress finally takes her clothes off. (Comment this)

4 - Weird, that goes for Germans, too, after all, we are the world's second largest market for the porn industry after the US. And dubbed porn certainly "sucks", if you know what I mean. (Comment this)
