And now for something completely different (not)

I know what you’re thinking: He’s not really going to do this, is he? Damn right I am. This is one German tradition I really love. A bit strange maybe, but aren’t most traditions – when they’re not yours, I mean?

For some inexplicable reason, everybody in Germany gathers around the TV to watch the very British “Dinner for One” every New Year’s Eve. And don’t worry about precisely when it will be playing, either. They run it everywhere at least once, on practically every channel it seems. You can’t miss it.

And now you can’t even miss it. And you don’t even live here! Enjoy.

Happy New Year!

Kommentare auf Deutsch? Logisch.

PS: Talk about "dumb as bread", as the Germans like to say. Gut gemacht! Thanks for the Bernd link, jmc.

1 - Hi Herrmann,
yes, "Dinner for One" is cult and a tradition in my family as well. As fas as I know it's rather unknown abroad... (Comment this)

2 - Very strange....

The kind of sketch you would see on a so-so variety show on British TV fourty years ago..

Hmm..

What you really need is more Bernd das Brot coverage.

Now a manic depressive loaf of bread is what I call humour.. (Comment this)

3 - I saw 'Dinner for One' in Germany on Christmas Eve five years ago. How an English-language music hall skit became a holiday favorite there is beyond me. But it is funny. Also funny was hearing all the Germans with whom I watched the thing recite every word along with it.

5 - I so love the end of that sketch.

"By the way, the same procedure as every year, Miss Sophie?"
"The same procedure as every year, James!"
"Well, I'll do my very best!"

Hillarious! (Comment this)

7 - The funny thing about this movie it is played on German television, and in Austria, and in Switzerland, and in Luxembourg, and in the Netherlands and Belgium continuously all day and night on NEW YEARS EVE, (in color and black and white), but not in Britain. The British never see this movie because the Brits have DRY HUMOR (humour), if though the ACTORS are BRITISH. (Comment this)

8 - EVEN THOUGH the Actors are BRITISH. It is a tradition on the continent every NEW YEARS EVE. (Comment this)
